We have another awesome pet adoption event coming your way! Last month we had a blast with Culver City Mayor Jeffrey Cooper, the Culver City K9 Unit and Culver City Fire Department. EIGHTEEN cats and dogs found their furever families!
On November 19th, we’re looking to top that number with another special adoption event. Adopt & Shop is joining forces with ace photographer Grace Chon and author Melanie Monteiro, as well as other great rescues:
Homeless To Forever Foundation
Soula’s Way Animal Rescue
And we have some excellent goodies for every new dog and cat owner! You’ll get a profesh photo of you and your new four-legged friend taken by Grace Chon Photos. You’ll also get a FREE copy of “Waggish: Dogs Smiling for Dog Reasons,” a book by Grace and Melanie.
This is an event you won’t want to miss! See you there!
Happy National Senior Pet Month! November is a great time to show senior pets some TLC. Sure puppies and kittens are cute, but senior pets come with a lot of perks. They’re frequently more mellow than their younger counterparts. Plus, you don’t have to housetrain them. Here are some of the senior pets currently available for adoption at our Culver City store.
My name is BeeGees. Much like certain members of a certain music group, I too have a cute little beard. I’m a Terrier mix and only weigh 15 lbs. At 7 years of age, I have plenty of life left in me.
I’m a well-rounded dog. I’m energetic sometimes and other times I am very calm. I guess you could say that I have a medium energy level. I’m also very good with other dogs. I would do great in a home with more than one canine and would love trips to the dog park. I would also be happy as your one and only pet though as well. Make me a part of your family today!
I’m Bamboo – the sassy and energetic little lady that loves to meet new people. I’m an itty bitty 7-year-old pooch. Topping the scale a wee 9 lbs, I’d do fine in an apartment. I like learning new things and getting treats as a reward. I bet you could teach me a lot of tricks! I’m always up for an adventure. You’re guaranteed to have a tail-waggingly good time with me by your side. If you’d like to start your adventure with me, come see me today at Adopt & Shop.
Coco aka Queen Coco
Hey, I’m Coco and I’m not like other senior pets. I have loads of personality and attitude to spare. I’m 8 years old. That’s old enough to be litter-trained but young enough that you’d have many happy years with me.
I’m punk rock. Think of me as your orange Joan Jett or Debbie Harry. Just like those rockstars, I’m a liberated lady and independent woman. I’m not much of a cuddler or lap cat. I don’t need that kind of attention like other needy cats. You let me go on my way and I’ll let you do your own thing.
I’m such a rockstar that I even have my own personal backscratcher. It’s an actual backscratcher that the cool and loving people at Adopt & Shop use to scratch my butt. Traditional petting and cuddling just isn’t my cup of tea. But man, I love that backscratcher.
And have I mentioned I’m gorgeous? Folks swoon over my beautiful orange fur and big white belly. I’m a large kitty but that means there’s more of me to love. That’s just another thing that makes me so unique!
Let’s cut to the chase: I want an owner who “gets me.” This rockstar ain’t no ordinary cat. I’m one-of-a-kind. I’m the type of cat that gives you plenty of hilarious stories to tell your friends. At the very least, I deserve my own Twitter and Instagram accounts. So bring me home today!…Plus, Adopt & Shop will even throw in the backscratcher for free.
October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month. While we love Pit Bulls all year long, we tried extra hard last month to find homes for these sweet doggos. We’re happy to say that both our Culver City and Lakewood locations adopted out wonderful Pit Bulls.
Our efforts culminated in Dogs on the Job, an adoption event on the 29th in partnership with Angel City Pit Bulls, Karma Rescue and Wags and Walks. We match 18 pets with families, and more than 3 of these animals were Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes! Read on to learn more about some of our favorite happy endings from last month.
Princess came to us on October 18th from Palmdale Animal Care Center. The Center is over 60 miles away from Adopt & Shop in Culver City, but 4-year-old Princess was worth the drive. We immediately fell in love with this sweet Pit!
Princess lived at our Culver City location for 10 days before being adopted. And we couldn’t be more pleased she found her furever family. Her tan fur and white markings are cute as can be. Her paws even look like little white socks.
We just knew she’d make an amazing family dog. This gentle submissive girl is such a lovebug. She’s happiest when pleasing her people. She follows your lead instead of being stubborn and defiant like some dogs. Princess also adores getting lots of belly rubs. This 57-pound dog is truly a couch potato. She’d rather chill out than go hiking or run a 5k.
You truly missed out if you didn’t get a chance to meet Charles at our Lakewood store! He hails from the Downey Animal Care center and he’s perfect proof that not all Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes look alike. Charles is what we call a “lowrider” and has short little legs in comparison to his sturdy keg-like body.
This boy is only 3 years old and has so many happy years ahead of him now that he was adopted on the 29th. He’s more the soulful type and much more mellow than some of his doggie friends. Like Princess, he loves to just hang out. We’re sure his owner is enjoying lots of quality cuddle time with this 45-pound darling.
Skipper arrived at our Culver City location all the way back in July, but her lucky day didn’t come until Friday the 13th last month! This photogenic dollface absolutely won our hearts and we were so happy when she finally found a home. Also 4 years old, Skipper was a staff favorite this year.
If Skipper’s light tan fur doesn’t catch your attention, surely her personality will. She’s a happy-go-lucky Pit Bull who relishes the little things in life. She’s a sunbathing crowdpleaser who enjoys the company of children and other dogs. She has excellent leash skills and is happiest when devouring peanut butter Kongs!
Convinced a Pit Bull is right for you? We’re inclined to agree! These big snugglers make excellent companions and we they’re frequently available for adoption at our Culver City and Lakewood locations. So stop by and meet your new best friend!

(Said in our best Jack Nicholson voice) YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE CUTE! This week, polydactyl cats, commonly called Hemingway cats, arrived at Adopt & Shop. These Hemingway cats, or in this case Hemingway kittens(!), have extra toes that make their paws look like oversized mittens. If you’re looking to adopt a kitten or two, now is the time! We only have FIVE baby Hemingway kittens up for adoption: Ernest Hemingway, Mariel Hemingway, Margaux Hemingway, Hadley Hemingway and Jack Hemingway. Hurry and get to Adopt & Shop while they’re still available!
About the Hemingway Kittens at Adopt & Shop
Our first, and slightly older, litter has one female and two male Hemingway kittens. They appear to be shorthair, grey tabby cats. Right now they enjoy playing with each other and taking lots and lots of naps. The second polydactyl kitten litter has two females. These baby girls have a siamese appearance and also love playtime and napping.
How to Care for Your New Polydactyl Kitten
This physical anomaly is easy to care for and unlikely to cause health problems. In fact, owning a Hemingway cat is much like owning a regular cat. Just examine their paws regularly as you would with any kitten. Obviously claw maintenance might take an extra minute! Keep the claws clipped to avoid ingrowns and infections.
Hemingway Cats: A Brief History
Polydactyly is nothing more than a genetic anomaly. Sailors believed polydactyl cats had better “sea legs” that made them exceptional climbers. Crew brought these kitties on voyages both to control rodent populations and as good luck charms while at sea.
One such ship captain gifted American author Ernest Hemingway with an all-white polydactyl cat named Snow White. Upon Ernest’s death in 1961, the Hemingway House in Key West became the Hemingway Home and Museum, which has almost 50 cats. Nearly half of the Hemingway House population have polydactyly, hence the term “Hemingway cats.” These descendents of Snow White have nearly as much moxie as Ernest Hemingway himself, and safely weathered Hurricane Irma.
Again, make sure to visit Adopt & Shop while little Ernest, Mariel, Margaux, Hadley and Jack are still available for adoption. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for updates and squee-worthy photos!
