The weather’s getting warmer, the days are getting longer… yep, it’s spring in Los Angeles! And now that the season is changing, there are a few things you want to do to help get your pet ready. Here’s how to prepare your animal for spring in LA!
It’s important to have your pet microchipped any time of year. Even if you have an indoor pet, you never know if they might try to make a run for it. After all, screens break and pizza guys accidentally leave doors open all the time. However, if you’re going to be outside with your pet in the springtime, it is extra important to make sure your pet is microchipped. Microchipping is easy and permanent and only costs $10 at our stores on Microchip Mondays!
After your pet is microchipped, you need to register the chip. A microchip only works if it’s registered. You can do so for free with us at Found.org! Basically what registering does is it connects your pet’s chip to your contact info. This way if your pet is found after getting lost, a Good Samaritan can make sure your pet finds their way back home!
Flea and Tick Prevention
You need to treat your pet with flea and tick preventative all year long. This is especially true in warm climates like Southern California, so if you don’t have your pet on a preventative, now’s the time to start! We offer a variety of anti-flea and tick products at Adopt & Shop. We especially love Tropiclean Flea & Tick Yard Spray, ARK Flea Flicker Tick Kicker and Vet’s Best Anti-Flea Shampoo.
Microchips are great because they’re permanent and work if your pet slips out of their collar, but identification tags are your first line of defense if your pet ever gets lost. The easiest way for someone to identify your pet as yours and not a homeless animal is with an ID tag. We have a bunch of ID tags available at our stores and can engrave them for you on the spot. Choose whichever font fits your pet’s personality best and we’ll engrave your phone number and pet’s name on the tag.
Leash and Harness or Collar
When outside with your pet, it’s best to use the buddy system. Even incredibly well-trained pets can get spooked by fireworks, loud trucks or aggressive animals and then run away from their owners. The best way to prevent separation is with a leash and a harness or collar. We carry several different types of leashes in store, including rope leashes and ones made from nylon webbing. We also have a variety of collars and harnesses that come in many different colors and patterns.
Spring is obviously the best time for spring cleaning! Bust out all of your cleaners and deep-clean all of your pet’s bedding and toys. They’re likely super grimy and could use a good scrub. You might even find that certain toys or beds are beyond repair and simply need to be replaced. In that case, come to Adopt & Shop! We carry toys, beds and bed covers.
