What Is a Microchip?
A microchip is a small device – about the size of a grain of rice – implanted beneath your pet’s skin. It contains a unique identification number that links to your contact information in a registry. Think of this number as similar to a social security number. When collars are damaged or lost, the microchip is your pet’s only permanent identification. If detected by a pet professional with a scanner, they can look up your pet’s identification number and trace your pet back to you pronto. Adopt & Shop locations in Los Angeles will microchip your pet during our Monday clinic times.

Is a Microchip a GPS?
Nope! A microchip is not a GPS. You can’t track your animal with a microchip. Here’s how it works: If your pet gets lost and is found, a shelter worker or vet will scan the pet. If their scanner detects a microchip, it will show them your pet’s identification number. They can then look up that number online. It will tell them what company that pet’s microchip is registered with. Then, they can contact that company to get your contact information and contact you. If your pet is registered at found.org, this process happens with a few clicks, instead of a long process. You can learn more about how our Found Pet Alert® System works here.

How Do I Register My Microchip in Los Angeles?

A microchip is only effective if it is registered. Otherwise, you and your pet can’t be reunited because your pet’s microchip isn’t connected to your contact info. You can register your microchip for free at our pet registry. Not only is it free to register, but it’s also free to use and free to update. Remember to update your contact information every time you switch addresses or phone numbers!Visit foundanimals.org to learn more about registering your pet with a microchip in Los Angeles County, view pet owner resources and adoption services and learn about our mission.
